Akron’s BMX Bike Club Rides High
When I first started shooting the cyclists from Akron’s BMX bike club last Saturday, I was struck by how much the experience reminded me of the E.T. ride at Orlando’s Universal Studios. It’s not often that one gets to see cyclists defying gravity to such an extreme – and merely watching imparted a sense of wonder.
According to the sport’s national Website (http://www.nbl.org/) and its mission statement (http://www.nbl.org/about/mission/), “people from all ages and all walks of life are given an opportunity to participate in a world-class, Olympic sport…through year-round local, state, regional and national programs.”
Akron Club President Bill Calhoun views BMX’ing as a healthy physical outlet for kids and a wonderful alternative to time spent video gaming. Racers ages range from two to 70+, and – based on my experience at the park – the group exhibits a familial sense of comradarie despite the varying ages and experience levels of the participants.
Those who are interested in trying the sport need a bike, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, gloves and a helmet (helmets can be rented at the track).
The club is located behind at 1000 Massillon Rd. off the access road to Derby Downs. For more information on local activities, please visit http://akronbmx.org/.
