On the Natural World

I can remember the exact moment when I came to the conclusion that no one makes better art than the natural laws themselves, and in truth, there was nothing particularly amazing about the incident that generated this not particularly original thought. I was in my twenties and was seated in the kitchen watching the way wax melted down the side of a candle and onto the table. The fluidity with which it created its flow and puddle just kind of struck me, and I began to think about artists and their attempts to imitate what comes naturally to, well, nature.

(In a somewhat flip moment of consideration – especially while trying to amuse myself on interminable car trips – I’ve challenged myself to attempt to “think or imagine something that no one in the world has likely ever imagined;” try it sometime, if you wish, and feel free to share your original thought right here. In fact, I should likely put up a Web site devoted to that idea alone. Surely it might provoke …well, something!)
